Can you tell us about yourself and how long you have been using Blued?
My name is Andy Tran, I’m 26 years old from Cornwall. I’m currently owning a little salon in town. Working six days a week literally leave me with no social life but I try to go to the gym four times a week to keep fit and that’s one of my hobby. I’m very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country, therefore on my day off, I enjoy going for a long walk along the coast to refresh my mind and regain energy from a hard working week. I’m passionate about traveling and so far I have covered most of south east Asia countries included Thailand, Philippines, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, etc.
Can you tell us about your coming out?
Coming out wasn’t an easy part of my life. Having an Asian background made it much harder. As nerve-racking as it seems, I managed to pull it off quite successfully. I still remember when I first told my friends, they thought I was joking, it actually took me a little while to prove to them I wasn’t just “going through a curious and confused state” lol. They were all saying “but you don’t act gay” haha up till now I still wonder what are gays suppose to act like. I feel super lucky to have a life as I do in the U.K, where people are much more open minded and accepting of the differences between everyone. I wouldn’t have the courage to do such a thing if I was still living back in Vietnam to be honest. My actual coming out story is quite personal and emotional, maybe on another occasion, I surely will share it with you guys.
If you had not done your current job, what would you have liked to do?
My ultimate goal is to travel the world and do some charity work. The more I travel, the more I learn to appreciate what I got and learning the meaning of “sharing is caring”. Those homeless children that you buy food for, they will repay you just by their innocent laugh and their genuine happiness; that is priceless to me. Everyone wishing this world to be a better place but if no one act on it, it will never happen. Remember guys, every little helps 😊
Have you ever felt judged/discriminated against by your peers within the gay community?
In life, as much as we like to deny it, we all get judged in many different forms. For example you walk into a gay club, sometimes you get the look that says “what the heck are you wearing?” or “who does he think he is wearing a vest” etc. Often you get judged based on your race, your body build, your weight or even your age. Personally I put it down to everyone having their own opinions and they are entitled to them. I wasn’t born to please everyone therefore judge all they want, I’m happy being me. Luckily enough, I haven’t experienced any serious discrimination by my peers. Being “gaysian” (gay + Asian) lol in this country isn’t easy, I occasionally get called names and stuff but it does only make me a bigger and stronger person than they ever will ,so I just feel sorry for them. I was raised with good manners and I’d rather keep it that way. Though this world would never be a fair playground as much as I want it to be, I would fight for what I think is right, along with my stubbornness, I do get it my way now and again lol.
Finally, tell us something you’ve never told anyone else
Last but not least, something that I have never told anyone else? Haha you guys try to get the better of me already lol. Come on guys , I’ve only know you for 3 months haha but ok here is one. I was once approached in a straight nightclub by the manager. He offered a job as a dancer on the stage which I accepted lol. I went to work on the first shift just for an hour but it was the most tiring hour of my life, I was dancing my sock off non stop, sweating like never before, my top was off, girls were dancing around and touching me etc. Red bull was the only thing that got me going lol. End of the shift, the manager was asking for my ID and he realised I was only 17 back then haha so I got banned FOR GOOD 🙈🙈🙈.
